15 Creative Costumes for your Baby's First Halloween

It’s that time of year again. It’s a Halloween just like any other, only you’re dressing an extra little person this time! If it’s baby’s first Halloween, you’ll want to make this one super special and memorable!

While animals and mermaids are always classics, you may want something more unique to get your little monster to stand out from the crowd. We’ve got you covered with some really creative Halloween (and cosplay) costumes for your baby this year! All of these costumes won’t break the bank, are super easy to do, and most of all creative and fun!

1.Stay Puft - Ghostbusters

Source

The Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow man is a classic. You can buy the costume online, or you can make your own.

While the original Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is over 100 feet tall, a mini version of him will look even better and how cute is that?

What You’ll Need

  • White puffer suit

  • Sailor cap

  • Red ribbon

  • Blue sailor collar

2. Gumball Machine

Source

Turn your baby into a gumball machine by gluing cotton balls to a hat. Then, write 25 cents on a red top.

If your baby won’t wear a hat, then glue the gumballs to the shirt instead. Then use the 25-cent sign on your baby’s bottoms.

What You’ll Need

  • Colored cotton balls

  • Fabric markers or iron on

  • Red dress or shirt

3. Gizmo - Gremlins

Source

Gizmo is a good costume to buy if you don’t want to make your own. Otherwise, stick to a generic animal costume with the right coloring and work with it.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you can dress your baby as a gremlin. If you do choose mogwai, please do not get it wet or feed it after midnight. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

What You’ll Need

  • Furry one-piece

  • Hat with mogwai ears

4. Chucky - Child’s Play

Source

You don’t need to sew or buy anything special for a Chucky costume. This creepy costume is easy to make with what you have.

If you don’t have overalls, you may be able to find some at a thrift store. Don’t forget the “Good Guys” label.

What You’ll Need

  • Overalls

  • Fabric markers

  • Striped long-sleeved shirt

  • Red shoes

  • Red wig or safe hair dye (if the baby doesn’t have red hair)

5. Cotton Candy

Source

Cotton candy is an easy costume you can use for your baby. You can use regular cotton or tulle for the fluff.

If you have a can-can or tutu, you can use it as the bottom, and then you only have to add a fluffy top.

What You’ll Need

  • Cotton or tulle

  • Tights

  • Pointy hat (birthday hats work)

6. Chuckie - Rugrats

Source

Chuckie is the most beloved Rugrat and the easiest to recognize. Stores like Box Lunch and Kohl’s usually have Chuckie shirts.

If you can’t find one, just buy a blue shirt and decorate it. The rest is easy as long as you can pull off the orange hair.

What You’ll Need

  • Orange wig or safe hair dye (if the baby doesn’t have red hair)

  • Purple glasses

  • Green shorts

  • Red chucks

  • Yellow socks

  • Blue space top

7. Old Person

Source

While Benjamin Button is a great concept, it’s easier to go with a typical old person. Use your imagination for the details.

For old men, bowties and flat caps are useful. For old women, curlers and muumuus are great.

What You’ll Need

  • Wig

  • Baby clothes (look for inspiration)

  • Walker for older babies

8. Munchkin - Wizard of Oz

Source

Represent the Lollipop Guild with a Munchkin costume. Swirl their hair, dress them in elf clothes, and give them a lollipop.

Of course, the lollipop doesn’t have to be real, and the hair can be sewn onto a hat. But, the result will be the same.

What You’ll Need

  • Swirled hair

  • Lollipop

  • Elf shoes

  • Shirt with collar

  • Striped leggings

9. A Hobbit - LotR/Hobbit Series

Source

Choose your favorite hobbit and use it as your inspiration for your baby’s costume. The little guys don’t need the full outfit to pull off this cute Lord of the Rings costume.

They can go barefoot if you’re indoors, which is canon. As for the specific clothing, take a look at generic medieval clothes.

What You’ll Need

  • Cloak

  • Slightly pointed ears

  • Capris

  • Vest

10. Burrito

Source

A burrito is a unique, cheap, and easy costume to use for your baby. You can get a tortilla-colored blanket or buy a tortilla blanket.

The rest is easy. Just remember to use fake foil rather than real foil, which could cut your baby.

What You’ll Need

  • Fake veggies

  • Tortilla blanket

  • Wrap (optional)

11. Wilson - Cast Away

Source

There are two ways you can go with this. You can either cut apart a large ball or stuff a large white shirt.

Either way, the grass hat and red face on the front will be the key pieces. So get create with the white part or leave it as a plain onesie.

What You’ll Need

  • Volleyball or white shirt with stuffing

  • Red fabric paint

  • Grass hat

12. Beanie Baby

Source

Beanie Babies are easy because you can use any generic animal costume and make a TY tag for the ear.

If you have a costume lying around but you don’t want to go too basic, a small cardboard tag will make it interesting.

What You’ll Need

  • TY tag

  • Animal costume

13. Slappy - Goosebumps

Source

This is an easy costume if you have a baby tux with a red bowtie. Use non-toxic paint for the face to make dummy lines.

If you want something even scarier, opt for Jigsaw, which is another dummy that is much harder to create a cosplay of.

What You’ll Need

  • Tuxedo

  • Red corsage

  • Face paint

14. Cabbage Patch Kid

Source

Cabbage Patch Kids were the doll of many childhoods. You can recreate one with your baby with nothing but a yarn wig.

The clothing isn’t important unless you’re creating a specific doll. Add some rosy cheeks for added effect, or leave those chubby cheeks alone.

What You’ll Need

  • Yarn wig/hat

  • Colorful clothing

  • Face paint (optional)

15. Troll Doll

Source

If your baby is older and it’s a nice temperature inside, you can leave off the clothing for a while and use a diaper cover.

Otherwise, use skin-tone clothing and add the gem to the belly button. This is a cheap and easy costume if you can get the hair right.

What You’ll Need

  • Wig or safe hair dye

  • Belly button gem

  • Skin-tone clothing

Tips for Baby’s First Halloween Costume

  • Make sure you use age-appropriate costumes (hats for newborns, shoes for walking babies, etc.)

  • Use their hair (or lack of hair) to your advantage and get creative with costumes. Who doesn’t love a baby with mustache?

  • Pay attention to the weather and dress accordingly. Furry coats and hats make great baby cosplay items!

  • If you have older kids that love video games, why not get the entire family involved and do a video game themed Halloween. There are some creative Fortnite costumes that everyone will love and can you imagine baby’s first Fortnite skin costume? The older kids would love it!
