Having a spare room in your home is a blessing. You have extra space that a lot of other people don't have, and you can use it as you like. Sometimes a spare room is nothing more than a box room, but it can still prove to be a useful space. However, you might be unsure about what to do with a spare room. It can become a dumping ground for boxes when you first move into your home, and then it never really gets fully utilised. If you have a spare room that isn't doing much of anything or that doesn't have any personality or a distinct use, you can turn it into something more.
Clear It Out
You might need to start by clearing out your spare room. Spare rooms often end up as storage spaces, where you put anything that doesn't fit elsewhere. But if you want to get more use out of the room, you need to get rid of some of the things you're keeping in there. Some of it might be unpacked boxes from when you moved in. Some stuff could be moved to a different storage space, whether you use self-storage like Mobistorage or you find space in your garage or loft. Take everything out of the room and you can put some of it back in if it makes sense.
Decide on a Purpose
Spare rooms often become undefined spaces because you haven't decided what to do with them. Once everyone in your family has a bedroom, what should you do with the extra space? For some people it's clear. They might need a home office or they want the convenience of a hobby room or playroom. But others might have a harder time making a decision. If you don't have guests often, a guest room can feel like a waste of space. But you could make your spare room pull double duty as both a guest room and something else, whether it's an office or a home library.
Redecorate
If you haven't done much with your spare room yet, you probably haven't bothered to make it look good. Perhaps it's just completely plain because you haven't bothered to decorate. But if you're going to transform it, start by redecorating to give it some personality. That might involve painting, but it doesn't have to. Choosing some new decor might involve hanging some art or adding some other features to make the room look more interesting.
Furnish
How you furnish your spare room is going to depend on what you want to do with it. You might already have some pieces that you can use, maybe giving them a bit of a refresh to ensure they look good. But it could also be a good idea to get some new items, whether it's a bed, desk or some bookcases. You might not go all out for your spare room. It's easy to furnish it cheaply if you're on a budget.
Don't leave your spare room as a useless space that doesn't bring you any joy. Give it a makeover to make it more useful.
