A little while ago we were invited to Newquay, Cornwall to stay at Hendra Holiday Park for four nights and we absolutely jumped at the chance having heard and read amazing things about Hendra Holidays via Tripadvisor and other blogs where the reviews and photos of the park had also been amazing.
Cornwall from where we are in Buckinghamshire is about 4 and half hours and the journey there last week was smooth as the boys are at a great age now where they will happily entertain themselves in the back until we get to where we are going.
On arrival at Hendra the first thing I noticed was how lovely the park looked, there were beautiful colourful flowers everywhere and the park looked really clean and looked after. A member of staff was waiting outside the reception to greet the cars coming in and he ran us through what we needed to do to get our keys. Once we had our keys, we followed the map that we'd been given over to our static caravan which was a 3 bedroom Porthminster Premium and when we got inside we were all blown away by how incredibly lovely and spacious the caravan was.
Our Accommodation
The decor inside the caravan was incredibly modern and clean and the space inside was vast we had a huge corner sofa, lots of floor space and a dining table with space for four in the kitchen - it is absolutely perfect for families!
We had a full length fridge/freezer, a TV in the living area as well as in the main bedroom. There was a blu ray player for the TV in the living room. A shower and sink in one room and a toilet and sink in another. The boys had a bedroom each and so we had lots of space for our luggage. We even had a wardrobe in the main room for extra space. There were also sockets everywhere which was great as there does sometimes seem to be a bit of a shortage of sockets whenever we go away usually. The sockets in our caravan even had USB connection points which was quite modern.
Outside we had a lovely little bit of grass area as we were in the corner so the boys could play outside if they wanted to. We also had a lovely view from just outside of our caravan looking over towards the Cornish hills and landscape.
Our caravan was a perfect home away from home and suited us so much as a family. We loved hanging out in it in the morning and evening and when we just wanted a rest. We played several board games, watched some TV, played Mario Party and just really chilled out during our down time.
Wifi / Internet
The only thing that was an issue for us was the lack of WiFi and lack of signal for the Internet. Adam and I both work for ourselves via the Internet and even on holiday we can't completely switch off, especially so for me as this was a work trip. We did try and pay for and connect to the WiFi that we were given a leaflet for but it wasn't loading at all for us, despite us trying several times. I don't think this is an issue across the entire park however as I know that if we walked down the road a bit we'd get signal on our phones and there was free guest wifi offered in some of the public areas such as the soft play area which was quite handy!
Facilities and fun for kids
I cannot fault Hendra Holiday Park in terms of what they offer, there's so much choice!
One thing we loved a lot was their amazing Oasis fun pool with a super fun indoor pool as well as a fabulous outdoor pool. You do have to pay extra to use the indoor pool as it is run by a separate company but I think it works out at about £3 or so per person per swim if you show your membership card that you get for the length of your stay.
It's so worth going swimming at least once, the indoor pool has three big slides and they are a lot of fun. There are lots of lifeguards on duty which is reassuring and the place is kept as clean as possible even during the busy summer holidays. There's also a more shallower area for babies/toddlers/young children and a floating barrier that you need to go under if you want to access the deeper part of the pool. I liked this a lot as it meant I didn't have to worry about the boys so much.
I would suggest arriving as early as you can as when it's busy you may find yourself having to queue for a while as they only let a certain amount of people in at a time to avoid the pool getting overcrowded which, despite having to queue, I think is a great idea. Also don't forget to take a £1 coin for the locker!
Another favourite place for us was Henry's Playloft which is an indoor soft play area which I think my boys would have moved in and stayed at forever if they could have. I actually lost count of how many times we ended up going, they loved it!
The outdoor play area was just as fantastic with a huge pirates ship for the children to play on as well as a traversing wall to climb on. There was a super fun area for smaller children too with tons of climbing, sliding, swinging and balancing equipment as well as lots of seating areas scattered about for the parents.
We also loved spending some time in the on site arcades - you can't go wrong with a bit of 2p machine fun!
There is also a packed entertainment schedule on for all of the family. Things like children's activity sessions with arts and crafts as well as themed sessions. Plus early evening entertainment such as bingo and dancing and party games with Henry and Henrietta Hippo. Later on in the evening there's entertainment and shows on the for the adults.
Shops & restaurants
There is an on-site shop called the Market Place right next to the children's play area where you can pick up all of the essentials and more. Alternatively there is a Morrison's not too far away if you'd prefer.
Restaurant-wise there is the terrace bar and restaurant, Mario's pizzeria bar and takeaway, a fish and chip shop, a coffee cafe and a the snack shack at the outdoor pool for snacks and drinks.
We ate at the pizzeria one night and had a very tasty pizza there and then another night we had chips and a veggie burger from the chip shop. The chips were lovely (though it was quite a small portion), but we felt that the veggie burger was very plain as it literally was just a burger bun and a veggie burger inside with no offering of salad which would have made it a lot nicer.
The local area
We found that during out four night trip we didn't really need or want to leave the holiday park that much but I did look it up and there seems to be a lot of lovely nearby places to visit. There's also a number of beaches around that are only a short drive away. We ended up visiting Watergate Bay beach and it was a lovely beach with a very chilled atmosphere!
Overall thoughts of Hendra Holiday Park
We all really enjoyed Hendra Holiday Park, it definitely exceeded our expectations in terms of what we thought a caravan holiday here in the UK would be like. The park is well kept and well maintained and everything is of a really high standard. Our caravan was the perfect home away from home and we loved it for how spacious and modern it was. All of the staff that we encountered were also incredibly friendly.
I would have liked to have been able to buy the wifi for our caravan as this was a bit of an issue for us and I wasn't a huge fan of the lack of paths for pedestrians to walk on to and from the caravans to the main area of the park - I always found myself feeling really on edge about keeping the boys to the side with us especially as we were visiting in summer holidays when it was quite busy and lots of cars were using the roads. But on the whole, those two small details were really all that I can say that I'd like to see improved.
Hendra Holiday Park is an ideal spot for families, there's so much to do within the park and also so much in the local area including all of the nearby beaches. We had a wonderful relaxing time and really got the opportunity to bond and create precious summer memories as a family.
