Baby's averagely start crawling around eight months old and once they're on the move, they are off! If there's something dangerous to find, trust them - they'll find it! So with that in mind, here are just ten of the things that you should be when baby proofing your house that will help keep your little one/s safe!
1. Install a fireguard
We rarely use our log burner, but we still have our fireguard in place as the log burner is actually on sat on top of brick. My boys sometimes tumble whilst playing and messing about in the living room and having the fireguard in place just means it's one less thing for me to worry about. Clearly if we do ever use the log burner, the fire guard is always kept in place and any logs/matches or tools are kept out of reach.
2. Lock upstairs windows/use window guards
Toddlers like to climb so to prevent your little one/s from falling, upstairs windows should be kept closed/locked or a window guard should be used.
3. Install baby gates
Once your little one starts crawling it won't be long until they try for the stairs and when they do, they are quick! Install baby gates on your stairs to prevent accidents, you can take a look at this buying guide for more help with choosing the right sort of baby gate for your home.
4. Put locks on cupboards that contain items unsafe for babies and children
Cupboards such as your under sink cupboard which might hold things like bleach need to have a lock on. As do cupboards that contain any medicine that might be in reach of your child. The locks/latches don't cost a lot of money and can be bought form places such as Amazon and eBay.
5. Check that any blind cords are out of reach of your child
It's fine to have blinds in your home, but do ensure that any hanging cords are out of reach if your little one to prevent strangulation. This goes for things like remote controlled toys that an older sibling might own that has a long wire on. Anything with a long hanging cord/wire/string should be kept out of reach of your little one/s.
6. Purchase a non-slip bath mat
Baths can be really slippery and even more so when you have an active little one who loves nothing more than splashing about in the bath. To prevent slipping purchase a non-slip bath mat and of course never leave your child unsupervised in the bath.
7. Purchase a room thermometer
Having a thermometer in your little ones room helps you to quickly determine whether or not the room is too hot or too cold. Keeping the room at the correct temperature makes for a better sleeping environment for your child reducing the risk of SIDS.
8. If you have a cat keep them out of your babies room at night
Cats love to sleep on anything warm and when your baby is new and very tiny they are unable to push things like loose covers or cats that may be up near their face away or off of them. To be safe, keep pets out of your babies room whilst they are sleeping.
9. Purchase and attach corner guards
If you have sharp corners on things like coffee tables or any other furniture think about purchasing corner guards. They are inexpensive and they will help to increase the risk of injury if your toddler trips and falls on to a piece of furniture with a sharp corner.
10. Ensure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home
And make sure that you regularly check the batteries in them too.

DeleteIt is very important to think of every danger...toddlers have no fear and can get into difficulties quickly before you realise. Very useful list Alex, thanks.

Thanks for this. I'm currently babyproofing my house in preparation for my first baby and wasn't sure if I was going overboard! This really helps. 😊
