What's in my Hospital Bag? + WIN a £100 Mothercare Voucher!

The end of my pregnancy is now very much in sight and soon I'll be meeting my second little boy and will be referring to myself as a Mum of two boys. I feel like we're pretty much prepared, we still have a few things to sort out but we're so ready to meet our little guy now. I've got my hospital bag near enough packed now, but there's still things that'll need to be thrown in last minute, like cameras, phone chargers and some make up for me, but these are things that I'm still using everyday, so are a little bit difficult to have pre-packed.

Today I thought I'd share with you what exactly I've packed inside of my hospital bag. Even though I've given birth before and so have clearly packed a hospital bag before, I was sort of a little bit stumped when it came to remembering everything that I needed, so I referred to the exact same hospital bag checklist that I used when pregnant with Ethan from C&G baby club, it's great because it covers everything you need for before and after labour and offers lots of little bits of advice and tips for packing.

The holdall that I'm using is from Pink Lining and is very similar to this one. I love it because it's not only incredibly pretty, (isn't everything from Pink Lining!?) but it's really really spacious too - it literally holds tons of my stuff!

My toiletry bag is from Victoria Green and is packed full of travel sized mini's, including a fold out toothbrush, dry shampoo and all of the other usual toiletries (not all shown in the above picture). My make up bag is from Cath Kidston.

I've also packed some Magiccool - a cooling spray for instant heat relief. I have a feeling that it may come in handy for labour, especially for a summer birth!

This little grey sleep suit is what Adam and I have picked out as baby's first outfit, it's from John Lewis. We've packed two muslin cloths, one from aiden and anais and the other from John Lewis. The nautical themed bibs are from Next and we also have a little pair of newborn sized socks that are again from John Lewis.

Above is baby's coming home outfit.. the grey and white striped al-in-one is from The Essential One and is made with the softest material, it's ideal because not only does it look and feel like it'll be incredibly comfortable for our drive home but it's sort of stretchy too so it should fit him no matter what size he is at birth. The blue cardigan I got a few years ago in Next, it was Ethans first little cardigan.

We've got two newborn hats with us which are from Tesco, some scratch mittens to protect baby from scratching himself and also these gorgeous three pack of little vests from The Essential One that match the gorgeous sleep suits below.

These are baby's adorable matching sleep suits that we're taking with us, they are in size newborn and are so unbelievably soft. I can't wait to see him in these, I absolutely love the three designs!

I've packed my Tesco Mum maternity towels and breast pads (I used these exact same ones after I had Ethan and they were brilliant then so I've stuck with them again this time). I've also got some newborn sized nappies (again from Tesco), cotton wool balls, nappy bags and a pair of Diary Dolls - a protective underwear specifically designed for post maternity and a ladies time of the month (I've heard really good things about these, so am looking forward to seeing how I get on with them). I've also now packed some Water Wipes, though they hadn't arrived in time for the photo, as I've heard they're good for using on newborn sensitive skin as an alternative to warm water and cotton wool, being that they're made from 99% water.

This Jellycat bunny is Ethans gift to his little brother. We love the Jellycat range of soft toys and we wanted to get Ethan something sentimental to give to his brother to mark his arrival, so we thought this was perfect. Ethan has a Jellycat doggy which was a gift from his Grandparents when he was born and he sleeps with it every night, we're hoping that baby #2 will love his Jellycat bunny just as much and will want to sleep with every night too when he gets a little older.

As a gift from baby to Ethan, we're doing a sort of bundle of things we know Ethan will love. We've got a Spot the Dog counting book, a Peppa Pig noisy book, a minions activity pack and a reusable sticker pad. I think not only will this help introduce my two boys to each other but it'll be something to keep Ethan entertained during his hospital visit.

I'm taking these pink cat backless slippers from Tesco with me to keep my feet warm and I've packed baby's grey and white striped blanket for when we come home. The hot water bottle is again from Tesco and the reason I've packed it is because I used one on the bottom of my back during my back labour with Ethan and it really helped take the edge off of the pain of the contractions!

I've got two nighties packed in my bag. The navy one with the white hearts is my absolute favourite maternity nightie - it's from The Essential One, I can't explain how pretty it looks when on, I'm so glad I have it, it just fits around my bump perfectly. The second one is from Primark, it's not maternity but I brought it in the bigger size up and it also fits my bump perfectly. I have my swimming outfit with me in case I want to use the birthing pool and I've got two maternity/nursing bras, the white one is this one from The Essential One and the black and white dotty one is from my first pregnancy and was from Blossom.

I've packed some snacks and drinks (I'll also be taking a water bottle with me) to keep Adam and I going in case it's a long labour!

I've got a change of clothes, socks and additional black underwear with me. I have this really comfortable navy and white striped maternity top from The Essential One and a pair of black leggings and also a maxi dress I got a while ago from Primark. I've really tried to go for outfits that I know I'm going to feel comfortable in. They've got a little creased up after being packed in my bag for so long though so I may need to give these a little bit of an iron!

Additional things I've since added or that aren't pictured:
  • Water Wipes
  • Flip flops and antibacterial wipes for the hospital ward shower.
  • Lip balm to stop my lips getting dry.
  • My necklace from Adam for sentimental reasons.
  • An eye mask to help me rest on the brightly lit ward.
  • Ethans presents from baby (though I need to get a few more things - suggestions very welcome!)
  • A BRITA filter water bottle.
  • A towel.
  • A hairband.
  • A pair of flat shoes.

  1. I found having a straw for my bottle of lucozade was essential, so much easier to drinking the throws of a contraction!! :-) I love that pink lining bag! xx

  2. A little t-shirt with Big Brotheron would be lovely to buy for Ethan from baby! I would also take in a notebook too to note down any gifts you receive to make writing your thank your cards easier.

I also took in a set of baby announcement cards to send to family and friends and I wrote them out whilst in hospital - with my baby's name, date and time of birth and birthweight on! They had stamped envelopes too and the addresses already written on so they were ready to post straight away! I know I sent emails and texts but I think those cars are lovely to keep x

Good luck - I think you are sorted!

  5. I think you've got everything covered! I can't think of anything that I took that you haven't got on your list - although I packed some chocolate ;) xx

  6. You seem pretty organised!! I would also take a Camera with Spare Batteries or Phone Chargers? Amazing how quick Batteries run out especially when calling, texting or taking photos.

Other than that my list would be similar to yours.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh!! Flip flops! That's what I forgot in my bag! Thanks for the reminder! Good luck! I have 3 weeks to go!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. You've got everything covered! I would second the water spray/aerosol and the water bottle, and, apart from a mobile phone and a charger, I would recommend taking speakers with you so you can listen to music during your labour. We brought Bluetooth speakers and streamed music from our mobiles and it was great. Good luck worth your delivery!

  9. I'd say phone charger and nice clothes, nowt worse than the fist pics and you look drab

    ReplyDelete
  10. Everything perfect there. The only thing I needed loads was sleepsuits as Chloe was pukey.

    ReplyDelete

    Towel and dressing gown .

  14. I downloaded lots of lovely music- classical, choral and some light pop too which I kept on my phone and they docked it for me during the labour. I had it playing the whole time until I went down to theatre. It kept me calm and the doctors and midwives said it even kept them calm and relaxed too. All in all it created a rather lovely, soothing atmosphere, perfect for the arrival of Little One! Pillow mist spray and my very own special pillow case. Fab blog post Alex, you're super organised and ready to meet your little guy! xx

  15. I've not given birth before but I'm planning to pack some refreshing rosewater to spritz myself - maybe some relaxing lavender room spray too? I'm also going to have a favourite pillow ready and waiting for when the time comes - I'm guessing I will want some home comforts if I need to stay in hospital for a day or two.

    ReplyDelete
  16. A hot water bottle and a tennis ball as they are both good for relieving back ache during labour. By rolling the tennis ball in the small of your back against a wall.

    ReplyDelete
  17. a phone charger is the only thing I can think of

    ReplyDelete
  18. i brought lip balm, hair bobbles and hair clips too :)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  20. Great post Alex, and isn't the holdall perfectly sized for a hospital bag? x

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would take some pleasant relaxing music and something to listen to it on - ipod maybe. I would also take some maternity pads and breast pads - don't want to be sending out for urgent supplies straight after the birth.

    ReplyDelete
  22. TENS machine - it was my saviour during my 35+ hours back- to-back labour!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Peppermint essential oil was brilliant for staving off the nausea I felt during labour x

    ReplyDelete
  24. Definatley a phone charger!

    Ashleigh

  25. I think you have it covered all what I thought of you have packed it. I hope it goes quick for you x

  26. Tanya Camilleri11 June 2015 at 07:03

A cooling mist spray! It was a godsend to me. The wards are so hot and with all the pushing and being uncomfy it was nice to have a spritz every now and then

    ReplyDelete
  27. my ipod was invaluable and took my mind of the pain

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would say a photo of Adam and Ethan (and your cats) that you can have beside your bed if you're missing them after you've had the baby (and have to stay in for a little while) plus disposable maternity pants - i found them so useful.
I also don't think you have enough chocolate!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Have you thought about music? I hadn't realised just how important this would be until i was in the hospital. Luckily my husband had the Bonobo CD on his phone and we played it on repeat, it was so relaxing! Now every time i hear Bonobo i think of my daughter and that wonderful day.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would pop a couple of small bottles of water in the freezer to grab on the way as it melts along with your labour meaning you have ice cold water at all times it was a life saver for me :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I had photos of my other child as i had to give birth 200 miles away from her and was away for days so it meant i could feel a bit closer to her that way by having photos!

    ReplyDelete
  32. It looks like you have thought of everything! Thank you for the great hospital bag checklist, it will be very helpful for my first pregnancy!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi, your bag seems great! I also had chocolate, phone and camera chargers just in case!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Don't know if my first comment was posted so am posting again!! Your bag looks great. I also had chocolate, phone and camera chargers just in case!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Maybe an power bank charger for your phone? Think you have got everything, love baby''s outfit, best wishes for the birth

    ReplyDelete
  36. You picked some lovely things Alex and I love the bag and baby's going home outfit too! So cute. Not long now- yay! x

    ReplyDelete
  37. My maternity bag essential would be some magazines - there can be a lot of waiting around and sometimes it's nice to have something to flip through mindlessly!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I took some moist toilet tissue in with me. Best thing I did. Made me feel more clean especially after the birth and when using the toilet x

    ReplyDelete
  39. Elizabeth Hinds11 June 2015 at 12:55

Jumping on the band wagon a bit but I would definitely say a power bank charger and batteries as that was an issue when I was in hospital with my first :) The only other thing I can think of - and this might sound odd - is something to do if you're waiting around. I was induced with both my daughters and there were very long periods of sitting around on the bed waiting for the labour to start. I always wished I'd packed a pack of cards or something to distract my incredibly frustrated mind! I really hope it goes well for you - good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Baby is due in about 6 weeks and I haven't even thought about my hospital bag! I'm planning a homebirth so I'm more interested in what's going in my "homebirth basket" than my "emergency hospital bag" - One thing that will be right there though are my hypnobirthing CD's!

    ReplyDelete
  41. It looks pretty good to me. I also had lip balm which was handy afterwards as i found my lips (and mouth) got really dry from using the gas & air. x

    ReplyDelete
  42. wow , i think you're very well prepared. I found cartons of drink easier and someone else can hold if you in an awkward position. phone charger i remembered with my 3rd and was so glad haha

    ReplyDelete
  43. You seem to have lots covered, but a phone charger for sure x

    ReplyDelete
  44. You have so much covered already... Phone Charger and a straw would be my recommendations - I still need to pack my bag

    ReplyDelete
  45. I learnt to never argue with a pregnant women, look well prepared (:

    ReplyDelete
  46. A pen and puzzle book, they came in handy after my legendary 54 and a half hour labours!

    ReplyDelete
  47. A Brush and a camera!!! You have to look good (well your hair) when you have those first photographs taken!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think you have it all covered, I would take additional battery power banks for phone/camera, and a spritzer spray.

    ReplyDelete
  49. A camera and change for the hospital car park.

    @rachiegr

    ReplyDelete
  50. My absolute essential was my mini hand held fan, I couldn't have done with out it! It helped me through every contraction! Great post, really helpful for first time Mums xx

    ReplyDelete
  56. MP3 player for when you need to block out the sound of all the other babies on the ward crying.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Really helpful post hun, am looking to pack my hospital bag in the next couple of weeks and I really don't know where to start!
Pink Lucozade is my absolute must as well....boy I've missed that stuff! Haha am hoping it will give me some well needed extra energy in labour

    ReplyDelete
  59. a phone charger you have everything else covered

    ReplyDelete
  60. i hardly got chance to get anything out my bag this time...went in at 8am....gave birth less than an hour later. went up to the ward 2 hours later, got discharged home by 5pm.....however hubby popped home to fetch dd1 and took some things home out the way......took my clothes....so i left in my pjs...nothing was keeping me in hospital longer than i needed to. so my advice.....ensure helpful hubby doesnt take your beautiful bags home before you need them!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Some sudocrem or metanium for the baby? Some earplugs if they keep you in and you're on a noisy ward. I also brought with me a pillow from home which made me relax x

    ReplyDelete
  62. I would say phone charger, I really can't think of anything else, but I am not the best person to ask as I always forget stuff!

  68. A great run down of everything, you've got it covered! x

    ReplyDelete
  69. I just got my changing bag, I'm itching to fill it as I haven't used a changing bag in what feels forever!! Great giveaway xxx

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think you've got it covered.... so organized! I would definitely want a phone charger though, lots of pics to be taken and call/texts to make!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I am just in the process of getting my bag packed for hospital and one thing I got straight away is a little battery operated hand fan as I think the noise of a big fan would be annoying during labour

    ReplyDelete
  72. Arnica tablets are fantastic for helping you to heal after birth. I took them after I had my 4 baby and noticed a huge difference from my previous 3 births. I felt better quicker and didn't need to take pain killers for as long. You can buy them from Boots and Holland and Barrett.

    ReplyDelete
  73. What about a camera? My sister did a great job as the photographer during my labour x

    ReplyDelete
  74. SO glad you wrote this post. I realised today I haven't even started thinking about the baby bag yet. And what a brilliant idea about the dry shampoo. Definitely going to consider that. Your baby outfits are just gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Arnica tablets, which I bought with the expectation of having a natural birth. I ended up having an elective c section due to breech baby, and I really believe the arnica assisted my recovery. Also, more snacks for post baby in case you need to stay in as I found tea was so early that I got hungry in the evening!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. A frozen drink! To make sure you have a cold drink all through your labour!

    ReplyDelete
  77. You forgot to include a phone charger, it is disastrous to be out with a baby and run out of battery power.

    ReplyDelete
  78. You really have got everything covered! Before I got to the list of things you've added since I was going to say lip balm, a really good one, but you've sorted that! It's not a big deal if you forget anything though, that's what the father, and other relations are for, and it can stop them fussing sometimes!

    ReplyDelete
  79. phone and charger? disposable camera? stress ball to squeeze !!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think you have most of the basics. I also had my phone charger so I could take lots of photos, and my ipod so i could listen to my choice of music during the birth.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I would take a light dressing gown and a vest top for if you go in the pool (not sure if your costume is a two piece, other than that I think you have everything covered!

    ReplyDelete
  82. an extra bag to take all the baby gifts home with you, music to relax you, camera and camera charger, a book or puzzle book in case its a long labor the one thing you cant take along in a bag is to prepare yourself mentally for the unexpected i went it labor expecting to be home at least by the next day to my shock i had a 14 hour labor and was then rushed in to theater for an emergency c-section and had to stay in hospital for a week by the time i got home my partner only had a few days of paternity leave left so i was left to it :(

    ReplyDelete
  83. A Camera, to capture the newborn baby.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I took my auntie a bag of pick n mix and she devoured the whole bag after she had the baby, apparently the sugar really helps afterwards!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. That looks like a great packing list. My experience was slightly different as I went in for an induction so I spent 3 full days in hospital before heading to the labour ward. Apparently my little girl was very comfortable and in no rush to make an appearance. My top items were my kindle and some change to play quizzes on the screen over the hospital bed. It was a very very boring wait!

    ReplyDelete
  86. i would take a phone charger with you, they run out of charge very quickly and you wouldnt want to miss out on lovely pictures x

    ReplyDelete
  87. Phone charger as photo's and listening to music can quickly drain your battery

    ReplyDelete
  88. Spare phone charger.
The last thing you want is an almost dead phone as you're rushing out the house (no way to contact people with the good news!)

    ReplyDelete
  89. waterproof mascara, and download classical, soothing music

    ReplyDelete
  90. Lipbalm, my lips got so dry with all the heavy breathing!

    ReplyDelete
  91. A flannel! It's good warmed for headaches and cold for hot sweats

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think you have everything covered :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hairbrush and comb for yourself and maybe a little soft hairbrush incase your baby arrives with lots of hair (mine did!)

    @polly58

    ReplyDelete
  94. You seem to have everything sorted to me but there is no point asking me! So far I've bought a nightie and a few sleepsuits for baby! I have nothing! lol x

    ReplyDelete
  95. AN essential for me was earplugs and eye mask, I was in for 5 days first time and 4 days second time and there was absolutely no way I would've got any sleep. YOu probably won't be in for that long but just in case, always a really useful thing!

    ReplyDelete
  96. A Bikini top! I had planned in my head that I was going to have an epidural as I was being induced. But as it happened my little one came a lot quicker than expected and instead of this, my option for pain relief was a water birth. Having a bikini top to pop on in there makes you feel a lot more comfortable especially if you're in there for a number of hours.
Also a camera incase your phone dies for any reason, can't back those times to take any snaps you want. Love the shot of my daughter lying on the weighing scales!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Love the baby outfits, I would take phone charger, moisturiser, flanel

    ReplyDelete
  98. Massive pants!!! I brought a 5 pack so I could just thow them away after - didn't fancy washing! :) Great job packing

    ReplyDelete
  99. Lavender massage oil! So soothing to have someone rub my back through the contractions and the scent calmed me down.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The only other things I can think of is a phone charger, your phone/camera and some headphones. I found being able to zone out and listen to music really helped

    ReplyDelete
  101. iPod with all your favourite chill out tunes to get you into the zone

    ReplyDelete
  102. Some type of slipper socks you might need to walk around the room.

    ReplyDelete
  103. tens machine

    ReplyDelete
  104. i think you have done super with this bag!!! everything seemed to be covered but i did sneak in a bar of galaxy, ive actually replaced it 3 times still waitting to go to hospital!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. one very well packed bag! i would put a phone charger in if you have a spare for photos etc, maybe a couple of magazines or a good book.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Bag looks great! I'd also add chocolate for a bit of an energy boost :)

    ReplyDelete
  107. A hand-held fan to cool you down while you're in labour. I found it too hot in hospital and can't open windows :-)

    ReplyDelete
  108. I had a TENS machine and it was excellent. It was the Baby Care Obi TENS which is really simple and easy to operate and it really does help for any backache as well as the contractions. If you put it on as soon as the contractions start, then it starts building up endorphins that help you manage the pain. I found that once I used TENS along with the gas and air, then I never ever got to the point of feeling like it was all too much or unbearable like I had done in previous births.

    ReplyDelete
  109. a phone charger always helpful

    ReplyDelete
  110. My brother and his wife are about to have their first child and they were asking me for hospital bag ideas. I recommended a straw and handheld fan x

    ReplyDelete
  111. I needed 2 chocolate bars =I was famished

    ReplyDelete
  112. I felt bad I left my phone charger at home! I had to stay in hospital for a whole night and daddy wasn't allowed to stay with us. My phone died, so I felt a bit lost without it because couldn't ring or text him :/

    ReplyDelete
  113. I would add in a lip balm, I had really dry lips during labour and after!!!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Definitely a drink with a straw, my hubby could then hold it for me so one less thing to think about! I had apple juice cartons...

    ReplyDelete
  115. Your birth plan and also I took a thin dressing gown with me so I felt more covered when I had visitors.

    ReplyDelete
  116. A phone charger or camera and a mini-fan

    ReplyDelete
  117. A phone charger!

    ReplyDelete
  118. a battery powered mini fan

    ReplyDelete
  119. Cartons of juice a phone charger and some sweets

    ReplyDelete
  120. I've found this a great help, with no family to ask i'm struggling to get my hospital bag packed , i have been packing about the same as you have said, learning from forums and heard alot of people say lip balm, as the gas and air really drys your lips, I am going to pack everything i think i need and at the end of the day if i forget something it wont be the end of the world, my hubby can fetch for me and there are always shops handy, good luck all xx

    ReplyDelete
  121. A phone charger is essential - you don't know how long you will be in for and you will want to keep in contact with everyone

  122. My sister told me to take talc, as I would be quite sore. She knew what she was talking about, it was very soothing. Some people think talc is a bit old fashioned, and prefer designer lotions, but talc was perfect for me. I would reccommend something like Johnson's baby talc .. actually, it's quite good for babies, too, lol!

  123. The most important thing to me was my ipod and dock and i had a playlist made up of songs to keep me going throughout the labour ( although it didn't last long)

  124. Earplugs are great for ensuring you can get some rest after delivery, especially if you've been up for over 24 hours. I found the squishy silicon ones work better than those plastic earplugs, but probably best to try them out beforehand.

A scented candle for the labour room is a nice touch

  126. A Tens machine. It was so helpful with pain management during labour

  127. Phone charger and socks!
I found that my feet were cold during labour so I had left my socks on! :)

  129. Think you've covered everything, the only thing I would add is a big bar of chocolate (after the birth we all deserve a treat and something to make you feel feminie like a nice hair slide or a dab (don't mean paint your face up) of your fav purfume or lipstick something that makes you feel good after all its us who do all the hard work

  130. Have you considered getting Ethan a present from the new arrival? It sounds a bit daft, but it might just help strengthen the bond between the two of them right from the off since he's got that adorable bunny for your new baby. Our new arrival is our first, so we don't have this to contend with yet. It's not necessarily a hospital bag essential, but it's still cute right? Other than that, your bag looks similar to ours - except ours has wheels :)

  131. Labour is a long process and during the early bits, after the baby is born if you have to hang around you will probably get a bit bored. Maybe take a book/kindle?

  132. Towel and a comfy dressing gown. The dressing gown really helped me, reminded me of home x

  133. I think you have pretty much everything on your list. I don't think you had your camera on the list though. I know most people use their mobiles now but imagine if the battery ran out & you couldn't capture those first few moments

  134. I have just today finished packing my hospital bag - my first baby is due in 9 days!! So I don't have any experience in what is essential and I'm pretty sure I have overpacked, but one thing I won't be forgetting is my ipod - it's got a "labour playlist" of all my favourite songs (bit of Whitney, Disney, Michael Buble, completely random mix!) but also has a relaxation CD uploaded to it that I've been recommended to help me during labour. I don't know how much it will help, but it's definitely been helping me sleep at night!

  135. An eye mask - I struggled to sleep for the one night we were on the ward because the lights were on all night.

  136. I brought a notepad and pen. I noted the nurses names so I could send them a card and who brought what gifts to the hospital. It's also handy to note down anything you want to remember. Wishing you all the best with baby number two :)

  137. I would say a Camera and some spare batteries, a phone camera sometimes isn't as good for those first few essential pics, oh and maybe a little gift, from baby to their big brother x
